2028 is going to be big.
During an interview set to air on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” former President Donald Trump mentioned Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential future leaders of the Republican Party. When asked by moderator Kristen Welker who he envisions as his successor after the first 100 days of a potential second term, Trump responded that it was too early to say. However, he praised Vance’s performance and intelligence, suggesting that as vice president, Vance could have an edge. He also spoke highly of Rubio and emphasized that the party has many strong leaders.
Welker pressed further, asking if Vance was at the top of Trump’s list. Trump acknowledged the possibility, stating that having a standout vice president typically confers an advantage, but he also noted that others in the party would continue to hold significant roles. Trump emphasized the unity within the Republican Party and pointed to the strength of its leadership bench.
Addressing rumors about a potential third presidential term, Trump made it clear he does not plan to pursue one. He acknowledged that many supporters have encouraged him to stay politically active and have even begun promoting 2028 campaign merchandise. Nevertheless, Trump affirmed his commitment to serving one more term—should he win—and then handing off leadership to another capable Republican.
Although some allies have floated the idea of a constitutional amendment to allow a third term, Trump downplayed those discussions. He called the support a flattering endorsement of his leadership but reiterated that pursuing such a path is not part of his agenda. His focus, he said, is on delivering four impactful years and ensuring a strong Republican successor takes the helm.
