He’s not like other false Republicans.
Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah has made it clear that he will not endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for president, despite his strong criticisms of former President Donald Trump. Speaking at the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah, Romney expressed his desire for a voice in the Republican Party’s future, noting, “I’ve made it very clear that I don’t want Donald Trump to be the next president of the United States.” He added that there is a significant possibility the Republican Party will need to undergo a rebuilding process following the upcoming election.
Romney announced last year that he would not be seeking re-election and will conclude his term in January. Throughout his political career, he has been a vocal critic of Trump and suggested in June that he was unlikely to back Trump’s re-election campaign. Regarding Trump, Romney stated, “With President Trump, it’s a matter of personal character,” drawing attention to the former president’s legal troubles, including a jury’s ruling that found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation in a case involving E. Jean Carroll.
Additionally, Romney condemned Trump for his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, asserting that Trump incited an insurrection due to his grievances over the 2020 election results. As a result of his stance, Romney was one of the seven Republican senators who voted to impeach Trump for his actions related to January 6. Furthermore, he was the sole Republican senator who voted to impeach Trump in 2020 for charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
In response to Romney’s criticism, Trump has lashed out at the senator, labeling him a “disgrace” for his impeachment votes and suggesting that Romney is unable to accept the outcome of his own 2012 presidential campaign, which Trump characterized as one of the worst in history. Despite their ongoing feud, Romney maintains his position regarding Trump while seeking to influence the future direction of the Republican Party.
