He knows what US voters want.
CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten noted that if the polling inaccuracies seen in the 2020 election are repeated in 2024, former President Trump could secure a significant victory. Current polling data suggests Trump holds a 9-point advantage over Vice President Kamala Harris in handling the economy, a crucial issue for many voters heading into the 2024 election.
A Gallup poll revealed that 54% of Americans believe Trump is better suited to manage the economy, compared to 45% for Harris. The economy is the top concern for Republicans and most Americans, though it doesn’t feature in the top five issues for Democrats. Veteran Democratic strategist Hank Sheinkopf explained that while Democrats are confident in Harris’ economic approach, independents are still undecided, looking for clear reasons to support her. He emphasized that voters tend to focus on their personal economic struggles during elections, and Harris has limited time to convince them she can improve their situation.
Enten also noted that polarization heavily influences voter opinions on various issues, including the economy. For Republicans, immigration, terrorism, national security, crime, and taxes follow the economy as top concerns. Meanwhile, Democrats prioritize democracy in the U.S., the Supreme Court, abortion, health care, and education.
Trump currently leads Harris on other critical issues like immigration and foreign affairs, while Harris outperforms Trump on health care, abortion, and climate change, the latter being a low priority for Republican voters. The Gallup poll, conducted from September 16-28, surveyed 941 registered voters and reported a 4% margin of error. Meanwhile, a separate New York Times/Siena College poll found Harris slightly ahead of Trump in a national poll, with her lead falling within the margin of error, indicating a closely contested race.
