It was a tense moment.
The Secret Service shot a man near the White House early Sunday morning following an armed confrontation with law enforcement, the agency reported. The incident occurred near 17th and F Streets NW.
Earlier on Saturday, local police had alerted authorities about a “suicidal individual” potentially traveling from Indiana to Washington. Secret Service officers later located the individual’s vehicle and identified a person on foot matching the description provided.
When officers approached, the individual pulled out a firearm, leading to a confrontation during which Secret Service personnel fired their weapons. The suspect was transported to a hospital, though his condition has not been disclosed.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 27-year-old Andrew Dawson from Indiana, according to senior law enforcement sources. No injuries to Secret Service personnel were reported, and the event is currently under investigation. President Donald Trump, who was in Florida at the time of the incident, returned to the White House later on Sunday evening.
