Russia is next.
Ukraine has agreed to a proposal presented by the Trump administration during talks in Saudi Arabia, marking a significant step towards a potential ceasefire and an end to the ongoing war with Russia. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the agreement, which includes a 30-day ceasefire, will now be presented to Moscow for approval. Rubio expressed hope that Russia would accept the deal, noting that agreeing to the ceasefire would be the best goodwill gesture Russia could offer.
As a response to Ukraine’s willingness to engage with this proposal, President Donald Trump has agreed to immediately resume U.S. security assistance to Ukraine and reinstate intelligence sharing. Rubio emphasized that if Moscow accepts the deal, it will pave the way for formal peace negotiations. He stressed the urgency of the situation, stating that lives are being lost daily and that a ceasefire is crucial to stopping further deaths.
National security advisor Mike Waltz indicated that the next phase of talks would address more complex issues, such as the return of children taken by Russia and the exchange of prisoners of war. Both U.S. and Ukrainian officials discussed detailed security guarantees to ensure lasting peace, although the specifics have not yet been confirmed. Both sides have agreed to appoint negotiating teams to work toward long-term peace and security for Ukraine, with European partners expected to be involved in the process.
Rubio also mentioned that discussions about a mineral deal would take place in the future, while emphasizing that the primary focus of the talks was on securing peace. Although the mineral agreement is important, the current priority remains on ending the conflict and establishing lasting security.
