11 people were injured.
On Sunday evening in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a mass shooting occurred during a private Memorial Day gathering on a charter boat, resulting in 11 people being injured. Authorities have described the shooting as an isolated incident triggered by a conflict onboard. Ten victims sustained gunshot wounds, while an additional person suffered a different, non-gun-related injury. Some of those injured were found in the water and rescued by emergency personnel.
Several of the shooting victims remain in critical but stable condition at hospitals in the area, according to the Horry County Police Department. The event took place near Harbourgate Marina, a well-known location for boating and tourist activities, where social media footage showed a significant police presence responding to the incident.
In a separate but connected event, a North Myrtle Beach police officer was accidentally shot in the leg by his own rifle. The discharge happened as the officer was opening a gate to the dock. Video evidence showed the officer had both hands on the gate when the rifle fired twice. Because the officer was not actively using his weapon, other officers initially thought the shots came from the marina area.
The wounded officer was taken to a local hospital for surgery, and investigations confirmed that the gunfire originated from his own firearm. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is now investigating the accidental shooting, while local police continue their search for the suspects involved in the mass shooting.
