The Democrats are attacking their own people.
A Democratic congressman from New York recently attributed President-elect Trump’s victory to the influence of progressives, arguing that far-left positions have actually turned away some voters. Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., took to social media to claim that his party has “alienated historic numbers” of minority voters, pointing to pro-Palestinian protests and the “Defund the Police” movement as key factors.
In his post, Torres, who is a staunch supporter of Israel, argued that the far-left has caused significant harm to the Democratic Party, particularly among Latino, Black, Asian, and Jewish communities. He criticized progressive slogans and movements, including “Defund the Police,” “From the River to the Sea,” and the term “Latinx,” suggesting that these ideas are more aligned with the social media platforms like Twitter, Twitch, and TikTok than with real-world concerns.
Torres further emphasized that appealing to the far-left could be politically damaging, noting that it risks alienating the working class, who he believes do not support the progressive agenda. His remarks came in the wake of the 2024 election results, which showed that Vice President Kamala Harris had less support from Latino voters compared to President Biden’s performance in 2020.
Fox News Voter Analysis highlighted the shift in Latino support, with Biden securing 63% of the Latino vote in 2020, while Harris only garnered 54% this year. The analysis also found that support for Trump among Latino voters increased from 35% in 2020 to 41% in 2024, a shift that followed controversy over a joke made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a Trump rally.
In response to the comedian’s remarks about Puerto Rico, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., used the incident to critique the Republican Party’s attitude toward Latinos. She suggested that such comments reflect how the wealthy view working-class individuals, including those in the service industry.
