The deadline is coming.
President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Vice President JD Vance and other top advisers to discuss a potential deal for TikTok as the deadline for its sale approaches. The meeting, set to take place in the Oval Office, will also include Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and national security adviser Michael Waltz. This discussion comes as the administration seeks a resolution that would allow the app to continue operating in the U.S. while addressing national security concerns.
The uncertainty surrounding TikTok began when former President Joe Biden signed bipartisan legislation requiring its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app to a non-Chinese buyer or face a nationwide ban. While no deal was reached, Trump extended the deadline upon taking office, giving TikTok additional time to find a solution. Vance and Waltz have been overseeing efforts to facilitate a sale and ensure compliance with security requirements.
Vance has expressed confidence in reaching an agreement before the deadline, suggesting that a deal would create an independent American-owned version of TikTok. Several potential buyers have emerged, with bids reaching up to $50 billion. Among the interested parties are Wyoming entrepreneur Reid Rasner, who offered $47.45 billion, and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who joined a bid led by businessman Frank McCourt. However, details on any finalized agreement remain scarce.
Trump, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, confirmed that there is strong interest in acquiring TikTok. He emphasized that the final decision rests with him and acknowledged ongoing negotiations with China regarding the app’s future. As the deadline approaches, the administration continues to weigh its options to ensure both national security and the continued availability of TikTok in the U.S.
