Trade Tensions Ease As China Deal Confirmed

Trump had a call with Xi.

Former President Donald Trump reaffirmed that a trade agreement with China is in place, though he emphasized it is still being finalized. Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office, Trump noted that the deal had already been announced, but certain aspects—particularly those involving rare-earth magnets—were still under review to resolve outstanding details.

Trump stated that while tariff rates have been reduced, they are still active, and the agreement remains intact. He indicated that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent would soon meet with Chinese counterparts to clarify and refine specific elements of the trade deal. Trump described the agreement as essentially complete, saying the next steps involve ensuring that all parties are aligned on its terms.

During the briefing, Trump also shared details of his recent phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, noting that both leaders extended invitations to visit one another’s countries. Trump confirmed he plans to travel to China with the First Lady, and that Xi is expected to visit the United States in return.

Addressing concerns over Chinese student visas, Trump said there are no new restrictions preventing students from coming to the U.S., though he stressed that vetting procedures would remain rigorous. He emphasized the value of international students, stating the U.S. welcomes them, provided appropriate checks are in place.
