It was a shocking tragedy.
Jessica Aber, the former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was found deceased in Alexandria on Saturday morning at the age of 43, according to local police. Authorities discovered her body after responding to a call about an unresponsive woman at approximately 9:20 a.m., as stated by the Alexandria Police Department.
At this time, police have not commented on whether the death is considered suspicious, and the cause and manner of death will be determined by the medical examiner’s office. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is ongoing, in line with standard procedure.
Aber resigned from her position as U.S. attorney on January 20, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s inauguration. She had been appointed to the role by President Joe Biden on August 10, 2021, and confirmed by the Senate shortly thereafter. Prior to becoming U.S. attorney, Aber served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the district starting in 2009, later advancing to deputy chief of the criminal division.
Erik S. Siebert, the current U.S. Attorney for the district, expressed profound sadness over Aber’s passing, calling her an unmatched leader and mentor. He emphasized her deep connection to the Eastern District of Virginia, noting that she was deeply loved by those in the community.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi also extended her condolences, describing Aber’s death as a deeply tragic loss. She sent heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Aber’s family and friends during this difficult time.
