Governor Challenges Federal National Guard Order In Court

It’s a political showdown.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a legal challenge against the Trump administration on Monday, objecting to the federal government’s decision to assume control over California National Guard units in response to recent unrest in Los Angeles. Newsom characterized the move as an alarming power grab, suggesting it signaled a dangerous shift toward authoritarianism.

In a strongly worded statement, Newsom accused former President Trump of bypassing constitutional limits and instilling fear through the use of force. He claimed the deployment was an overreach intended to provoke disorder and undermine the autonomy of state governments. “This is not leadership — it’s an attack on our democracy,” Newsom declared, urging governors from both parties to oppose what he called a violation of federal boundaries.

Historically, however, similar federal actions have occurred with little resistance. In 1957, President Dwight Eisenhower took control of the Arkansas National Guard to enforce school desegregation, despite opposition from state officials. Likewise, President John F. Kennedy used federal authority to ensure the integration of the University of Alabama in 1963. These past precedents complicate current criticisms of Trump’s approach.

Amid escalating anti-ICE demonstrations in Los Angeles, Newsom escalated his rhetoric further by challenging former ICE Director Tom Homan directly. Following immigration raids in the city that led to multiple arrests, Newsom issued statements daring federal officials to detain him, asserting that California would not comply with what he viewed as unjust federal actions.

During a visit to Los Angeles Police Department headquarters, Newsom stood by law enforcement leadership who maintained that the demonstrations — despite incidents of arson and violence — were largely peaceful. His comments underscored his broader stance against what he describes as the federal government’s heavy-handed tactics, reinforcing his commitment to resisting any perceived erosion of state sovereignty.
