This is a major shake-up.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his intention to step down once a new leader is chosen, following increasing pressure for him to resign over the past few weeks. In a speech delivered in both English and French on Monday, Trudeau explained that while he has always been a “fighter,” he believes it is time to step aside to allow for fresh leadership. He acknowledged that internal struggles within his party had hindered his ability to present the best option for the country in the upcoming election. As a result, Trudeau confirmed that he would resign after the party selects his successor.
Trudeau, the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, has been in office since 2015 and has championed progressive policies, particularly in areas like LGBT rights and abortion access. Notably, he made history in 2016 as the first sitting world leader to participate in a pride march in Toronto. Trudeau’s leadership was solidified with a third term in 2021, although his Liberal Party failed to secure a parliamentary majority in that election.
In accordance with Canadian law, the Prime Minister can request the dissolution of Parliament from the governor general, which would trigger a national election. Trudeau had called for the 2021 election to secure a mandate for continuing the fight against COVID-19 and supporting economic recovery. However, rising issues related to inflation, immigration, and potential trade tariffs from the U.S. led to a decline in his popularity.
Trudeau also faced internal party unrest, highlighted by the resignation of his Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who disagreed with his administration’s direction, particularly in response to the U.S. administration’s economic nationalism. Freeland expressed concerns over potential trade tariffs and emphasized that Canada’s ability to confront these challenges would determine the nation’s future. Her resignation, along with other growing discontent within his government, has fueled calls for Trudeau’s departure, including from opposition leaders like Jagmeet Singh.
