Things are getting out of hand.
Tensions flared at a New York City college Thursday evening when pro-Palestinian demonstrators attempted to set up an encampment on campus, leading to a chaotic confrontation with police. The New York Police Department responded to Brooklyn College after protesters declined to remove their tents, which had been placed in violation of university rules.
Footage from the scene showed demonstrators, many wearing keffiyehs, shouting aggressively at officers as they tried to manage the disorder. Some yelled profanities, demanding that police stop pushing people. In one particularly intense moment, a man was tased by officers during a struggle, while nearby a woman was told to remove her child from the volatile area.
Other videos depicted police subduing individuals on the ground, while fellow protesters screamed and tried to intervene. One bystander described the police response as excessive and chaotic.
Brooklyn College issued a statement saying that after several warnings, campus security and NYPD officers acted to dismantle the encampment and clear the area. The college emphasized its commitment to campus safety and the right to peaceful protest but underscored that all actions must comply with institutional policies.
This incident followed a similar uproar at Columbia University the previous day, where more than 100 demonstrators entered the Butler Library during exam preparation. That disturbance led to approximately 80 arrests, according to law enforcement sources.
