Olympian Gets Real About Strained Bond With NBA Father

She’s breaking her silence.

Trinity Rodman, Olympic gold medalist and rising soccer star, has opened up about her strained relationship with her father, NBA legend Dennis Rodman. In an interview on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, the 22-year-old spoke candidly about her family, describing the years she spent without contact from her father, despite his fame as a five-time NBA champion.

Trinity, who made history at just 18 as the youngest player drafted into the National Women’s Soccer League, went on to become a key player in the Washington Spirit’s championship win during her rookie year. She gained further recognition this summer when she helped the U.S. women’s soccer team win their first Olympic gold medal since 2012. Despite her growing fame, she explained that her father was largely absent during her childhood.

Dennis Rodman and his wife, Michelle Moyer, separated when Trinity was very young, and their drawn-out divorce lasted from 2004 to 2012. Trinity recalled difficult times during her childhood, including periods of financial instability, where she and her brother DJ often struggled to make ends meet. At times, they were even homeless. Trinity noted the oddity of attending a wealthy school while living in a car or motel with her mother.

Although Dennis Rodman expressed regret about his role as a father during his Hall of Fame induction in 2011, Trinity reflected on his emotional and financial neglect. She shared that during their time in the same city, she only saw him a handful of times each year, often feeling he was more focused on himself than on being a parent. One vivid memory for Trinity was during an NWSL match in 2021 when her father appeared unannounced, sparking a mix of anger and confusion for her.

Trinity admitted that although the brief interaction with her father after the game seemed positive, it left her disillusioned. She felt that his presence was more about public image than genuine concern for their relationship. She shared that while she tries to remain positive, the sporadic and distant nature of their contact has left her without hope of reconciliation. For her, the calls she receives from him are painful, and while she answers out of obligation, she no longer views him as a father.
