Northern U.S. Faces Dual Storm Onslaught

It’s a winter mayhem.

Two additional storm systems are forecasted to hit the northern United States this week, following a period of intense weather in the Northeast that is now winding down. The first storm will form over the Plains on Monday, bringing snow to the northern regions and heavy rain to the south. Kansas is expected to experience the heaviest snow, ranging from 2 to 5 inches. By Tuesday, the storm will spread eastward, impacting the Appalachian and mid-Atlantic areas, including parts of the Northeast such as Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Delaware, which may see 3 to 6 inches of snow.

A second storm will follow on Wednesday, bringing more rain and snow to the Plains and Midwest. This system will continue moving east and reach the Northeast by Wednesday night, lingering through Thursday. An arctic air mass accompanying these storms will cause temperatures to drop significantly, with some areas seeing temperatures 10 to 40 degrees below normal. The coldest temperatures will affect Montana and the Dakotas, where wind chills could dip to minus 40 degrees. Cities like Seattle and Portland might experience record-low temperatures.

The weekend’s storm brought significant disruptions to the Northeast, including snow, ice, and freezing rain. Central Park in New York City saw around 3 inches of snow, and Ballston Spa, New York, recorded 14 inches. Several other locations across the region faced hazardous road conditions, and the storm caused over 400 flight cancellations and delays. While winter weather warnings in the Northeast have now been lifted, some light snow showers may continue.

Looking ahead, colder-than-usual temperatures will persist across the northern U.S. for the next two weeks, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The frigid conditions are expected to continue as the winter season progresses, creating challenges for travel and daily activities. The combination of snow, ice, and extreme cold will affect many parts of the northern U.S. during this period.

These storm systems and cold temperatures will have a lasting impact on weather patterns across the region, and the continued cold snap could lead to further disruptions in the coming weeks.
