She’s thankful she only had daughters.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama recently shared on her podcast that she’s relieved not to have had a son, joking that he would’ve turned out just like her husband, former President Barack Obama.
During a recent episode of her podcast “Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast,” the former First Lady was joined by her brother, Craig Robinson, and radio host Angie Martinez. The conversation explored parenting and the challenges surrounding masculinity.
As the discussion neared its conclusion, Martinez commented that the Obamas might have considered having a son alongside their daughters, Malia and Sasha.
“You guys should’ve had a boy,” Martinez suggested.
“I’m so glad I didn’t,” Michelle Obama responded. “He would’ve been another Barack Obama.”
When Martinez chimed in that a “baby Barack” would have been wonderful, Obama replied lightheartedly, “No, I would’ve felt bad for him.”
Michelle Obama has made several candid remarks about her husband in recent months. In the podcast’s debut episode earlier this year, she described how he used to be notoriously last-minute when it came to preparing for events. Her brother joked it was due to him being from Hawaii, referring to it as “island time.” Michelle said that although he’s improved over the years, there were times he would begin getting ready only at the exact time they were supposed to leave.
“For him, a 3 p.m. departure meant, ‘Time to get up and find your glasses,’” she said, describing how she’d have to urge him to plan ahead.
In another episode, she joked about his early financial habits. When Robinson asked whether she would have been interested in someone who wasn’t financially stable when they first met, she raised her hand and admitted, “I married one.”
These public reflections have sparked commentary, including criticism from former Fox News hosts Tucker Carlson and Megyn Kelly. In an April interview, Carlson said Michelle Obama’s comments revealed what he called a pattern of discontent among political elites, suggesting she seemed resentful toward her husband.
“She clearly doesn’t like the guy,” Carlson claimed, adding that her focus appeared to be more on accolades and personal ambition than on family. “There’s something missing in that relationship,” he continued. “You get the sense the marriage isn’t a priority.”
Michelle Obama’s podcast episodes continue to prompt conversation about gender roles, marriage, and personal transparency—often drawing both praise for her honesty and criticism from political opponents.
