A devastating helicopter crash in Jersey City, New Jersey, claimed the lives of six individuals on Thursday afternoon. Among the victims were a Spanish family of five—Siemens executive Agustin Escobar, his wife Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three children—who were on vacation. The pilot, whose identity has not yet been released, was also killed in the crash. The family was visiting from Spain and had booked a helicopter tour to view New York from the air.
The Bell 206 helicopter, operated by New York Helicopters, took off from Manhattan around 3 p.m. and followed a typical sightseeing route along the Hudson River. After reaching the George Washington Bridge, it turned south along the New Jersey shoreline before crashing into the water near Hoboken. Authorities responded within minutes, and divers from the NYPD and FDNY worked alongside other emergency personnel to recover the victims. Despite immediate medical efforts at the scene and nearby, all six individuals were confirmed dead.
Investigations into the crash are being led by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). A team from the NTSB, including Chair Jennifer Homendy, was sent to the site to begin assessing the cause. According to officials, there were no weather-related issues at the time of the crash, and the water temperature in the Hudson River was in the mid-40s. It was also revealed that the helicopter was flying in a Special Flight Rules Area where air traffic control services are limited.
In the aftermath, local and national leaders expressed their condolences. New York City Mayor Eric Adams called the incident heartbreaking, especially since it involved a family on vacation. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy echoed those sentiments and confirmed that state agencies were supporting emergency operations. Former President Donald Trump also posted condolences online, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced a safety review to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Authorities have created a temporary safety zone in the Hudson River near the Holland Tunnel, close to where the helicopter went down. Recovery operations and the investigation remain active, with agencies working together to determine what caused the tragic accident.
