Next-level shopping is here.
Walmart is expanding its drone delivery service to five new U.S. cities—Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa—broadening its reach across five states and covering 100 store locations. This move positions Walmart as the first retailer to implement drone delivery on such a wide scale, aiming to provide customers with faster, more convenient shopping experiences.
The drone service is operated in partnership with Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet, the parent company of Google. Wing’s technology allows drones to navigate efficiently and safely, even in challenging weather conditions. These drones are remotely monitored by trained operators who oversee each flight to ensure safety, while the aircraft themselves are designed to fly up to 12 miles round-trip at speeds of 65 mph. They also conduct obstacle checks before making deliveries.
According to both companies, this initiative builds on a successful rollout in the Dallas–Fort Worth area, where drone deliveries have become a regular part of customer routines. Wing reports that Walmart already completes thousands of deliveries each week in that region, with average delivery times under 20 minutes. The expansion to new cities is expected to bring similar service to millions of additional customers.
Wing’s CEO described this development as the most extensive drone delivery expansion to date. The technology is not only being used by Walmart but is also part of partnerships with other companies like DoorDash, which has introduced drone delivery in select areas. Meanwhile, Amazon is also running its own drone delivery program in parts of Texas and Arizona.
As more retailers explore drone technology, it is becoming an increasingly viable solution for rapid product delivery. While still in its growth phase, drone delivery has the potential to reshape how goods are transported, offering a glimpse into the future of consumer logistics.
