CEO Killed In Premeditated Shooting

The suspect has yet to be found.

Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside the New York Hilton hotel on Wednesday morning in what police believe was a premeditated attack. Thompson, 50, was walking to attend an investor conference when a gunman approached him from behind and opened fire. The shooter struck Thompson in the back and right calf, then continued firing after a brief malfunction with the weapon. Surveillance footage showed Thompson being shot as he walked down the street, and he collapsed after several rounds were fired. Authorities confirmed the attack was targeted, though the motive remains unclear.

Thompson, who was from Minnesota, was taken to Mount Sinai West hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His wife, Paulette Thompson, confirmed that her husband had received threats before the shooting, although she did not know the specifics. The police investigation indicated that the attack was planned, but the reason for targeting Thompson has not been determined. As of now, the shooter remains unidentified, having fled the scene on foot and then on a rental bike.

The gunman, described as wearing a black hoodie and pants, was last seen in Central Park. A $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to his capture. Investigators believe the gunman may have used a firearm with a silencer during the attack. Despite several witnesses observing the incident, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

The shooting disrupted UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference, which was abruptly halted after the incident. The company expressed its deep sorrow over Thompson’s death, describing him as a highly respected leader who had been with the company for nearly two decades. Thompson, who became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021, had previously led the company’s government programs, including Medicare and Medicaid services.

This tragic event has left the UnitedHealthcare community shocked, and tributes poured in for Thompson, who was known for his leadership and dedication. The company has expressed its condolences to Thompson’s family and colleagues, vowing to continue honoring his legacy in the wake of his untimely death.
