He issued a shocking challenge.
A recent drag event at the Cathedral of Hope, a progressive United Church of Christ (UCC) congregation in Dallas, involved a controversial performance where a man dressed as a woman appeared to make threatening remarks about supporters of former President Donald Trump. During the “drag king” service, the performer joked about “sacrificing” Trump voters, which drew laughter from the audience. He further escalated the rhetoric by asking if anyone in the audience had voted for Trump, following it up with a comment about killing them if they had, although the tone appeared to be lighthearted.
The performer also discussed a prior event in Austin, where he and other drag queens supposedly went to confront Texas Governor Greg Abbott. In a mocking tone, the performer, referencing Abbott’s paraplegic condition, joked about taking away wheelchair ramps to prevent Abbott from accessing the Texas House floor.
The Texas Family Project, a conservative group that shared the video of the event, condemned the performance and called it an example of “evil” that needs to be exposed. Brady Gray, president of the organization, highlighted the importance of drawing attention to what he views as problematic behavior happening within Texas.
The Cathedral of Hope, known for its progressive values and LGBTQ activism, has hosted similar events in the past. In 2023, the church organized a drag event protesting a Texas law banning drag performances in front of minors, which was later ruled unconstitutional. The church also previously invited controversial drag troupes like the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a group that has faced criticism for allegedly being anti-Catholic.
